2022: The Year in Review

What a year, 2022. We’ve seen a lot happen in every vertical known this year in and out of digital. As the pandemic released it’s grip on society at large we began to venture out and see one another again, face to face. The pandemic has been tough on everyone, but for the most part, we’re resilient. We longed to go back to our favorite public spaces to interact and live. Being secluded is not easy for anyone, and the byproduct of that will be felt for years to come. As with any human experience, we learned what works and what didn’t.

Last year (2021) the digital world became busier than usual for obvious reasons. Anyone that has a business with a website became wildly aware that their website, and overall digital presence needed to not only be updated, but maintained. As we became home-bodies we became nearly solely reliant on the information we were accessing to be accurate and up to date. From that standpoint, we gained a lot. Technology has always had transformative powers that affects us all, and this time we really felt it. Amazon felt the enormous influx of cash, but so did smaller businesses that sell products. If you are in a service related area, you also saw a big uptick in many cases.

Back to 2022, we’ve seen ad dollars shift around, which will always be the case. LinkedIn’s annual revenue jumped from $10 billion to $13.8 billion in just one year. As employers become frantic to find and retain new talent, they flocked to the mainstream platform to fill seats. Facebook/Meta was met with challenge as Zuckerberg invested a bit too much ($2.8 billion) in VR. After so much time being shut in, this was probably the last thing anyone needed or wanted. The outcome speaks for itself, but in the long term it will return some on his investment. Timing is everything. Had that money been invested in changing communities to physically bring people together, things may have been different. It’s not all doom over at Meta, the combined platforms saw a 4% increase in 2022. Twitter. Wow. Well, Twitter had been consistently going through changes and it’s biggest came in the form of tech/space/automotive smart guy, Elon Musk. Where it will land is anybody’s guess. We’ve never spent a dime advertising on it, but certainly understand the utility of it. Google continues to flex its stronghold on the planet offering an ever-growing suite of products to the world. Don’t look for them to do anything but grow.

Looking forward to 2023, we think things will continue to grow in most of the areas just discussed. LinkedIn may slow down some as job markets settle, while Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp continue to be mainstays on the dinner table. The key here is to know where you fit in the digital world and how you can best have a conversation, build trust, and sell to your audience. Once those questions are answered you can then proceed to slowly grow your market share bite by bite. While there’s no magic elixir to become and overnight success, there is a method and a path that will get you there. Many business simply need visibility and messaging consistency month to month, year to year. That’s how you build trust. Being present. Taking part in the conversation. Giving back. Being kind.

As we look to 2023, we hope we can be of help to you along your journey to success.
